Pool Closing Season in Michigan: Avoid These Common Mistakes

10/7/2025

As the temps start dropping and the leaves keep falling, it’s officially pool closing season in Michigan. The next few weeks are when homeowners rush to beat that first hard freeze—and that’s when mistakes happen.

Here are a few we see every year:
  1. Waiting too long. Once the overnight lows hit the 30s, you’re risking frozen lines, cracked filters, and expensive repairs.
  2. Skipping the water balance. Even when you’re done swimming, chemistry still matters. An unbalanced pool over winter can lead to stains, scale, or worse—green sludge in the spring.
  3. Forgetting to clean before closing. Whatever’s in your pool now will be there in April. Give it a proper vacuum and brush before the cover goes on.
  4. Not protecting your equipment. Pumps, heaters, and salt systems all need to be drained and winterized. One missed valve can turn into a $1,000 spring surprise.
  5. Using a cover that doesn’t fit. If your safety cover is loose or damaged, snow melt will get in and make a mess.
If you’d rather not spend next spring draining, scrubbing, and replacing parts, let us handle the closing for you.

Square One Pool Service provides professional pool closings across Canton, Plymouth, Livonia, Northville, Novi, Westland, Belleville, and South Lyon. We’ll blow and plug lines, balance your water, and secure your safety cover so your pool is ready for next season.

👉 Schedule your closing now — before Michigan decides it’s winter next week.
